The inhabitants of this region were able to dedicate themselves to commerce, industry, agriculture and fishing as its main riches. The settlement of the population is favored by the transfers of land which the military authority granted to those who wanted to work on it, in addition to the growing commerce with Gibraltar, whose neighborhood and garrison stocked up to a great extent with the produce of this region and of its labor, for the attentions of its port and the work in the city. This hamlet grew fast and in 1870, the segregation from St Roque was authorized. On July 20, 1870, the constitution of its first Town Hall takes place and in its first session, the name was designated by which this settlement should be known, and the name of La Línea de la Concepción was unanimously approved, since the Immaculate Conception was the patron saint of the Spanish Army at that time. |
