There are remains of different civilizations, the most important testimony of this is the Roman city of Carteia. It was later inhabited by the Visigothics, who stayed there until it was conquered by the Arabs. The Muslim dominion lasted until1462, when it was reconquered and given up as a feudal estate to the House of Medina Sidonia. In 1501 it returned to the Crown of Castilla which favoured the colonization with privileges of the settlers in Gibraltar. The present population arose after the loss of Gibraltar in 1704. The inhabitants of that place rejected by majority the British offer to continue residing there and they moved to the San Roque Hermitage and started building the city around it, which at that time carried the name of "Muy Noble y Muy Leal" (Very Noble and Very Loyal).
