The village was founded by the Duke of Arcos, Rodrigo Ponce de León, to whom the Catholic Monarchs donated several mountain hamlets from Cadiz. Among these lots, there was the spot which is today El Bosque.

First, it took the name of The Duke’s Baths. Later, in view of the fact that the dukes of Arcos were lords of Marchena, it received the name of Marchenilla. At the end of the XVIII century, the dukes of Arcos gave it the name of St María de Guadalupe de El Bosque, due to the great devotion they had for the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Thanks to its heroic behavior during the War of Independence, Fernando VII gave it the title of town in 1815.
