Important industry of naval construction. Its salt pans and more recently its fish-farms have been of worthy significance to the economy of the town.

The architecture of its houses is very peculiar and typical of lower Andalusia. Its façades, with forged iron on windows and doors are characteristic. Given its peculiar location, the “estuary” fish (grey mullet, sole, sea bass) gives San Fernando a special taste. Typical shellfish of this town are “cañaillas” and the “bocas de la Isla”, which are the claws of a kind of crab which mysteriously grow back.
