Phoenicians and Tartessus knew of this town under the name of "Astaroth", the Romans named it "Spéculum Rotae" and the Arabs called it "Rábita Ruta" but, after the conquest by Alfonso X in the middle of the XIII century, it received the name of "Rotta".

In 1309 it passed into the dependence of the feudal estate of the Ponce de León family. The Catholic Kings visited in 1477. The discovery of America brought Rota a great commercial activity and merchant traffic, but it also had its negative aspects such as the attacks suffered by the village during the XVII and XVIII centuries. It was victim of the English and Dutch who sacked and destroyed great part of its heritage. In the XIX century, during the War of Independance, it was occupied by the French Army. After all these conflicts, Rota continued to work its lands, thus making the products of its plantations famous, as well as its wines and its seafood dishes.
