Although there are traces of its being inhabited since prehistory, the most important are of the Roman and Visigothic periods. The latter would be that of the primitive church of Santa María.

After the fall of the Visigothics, the first to inhabit the city were the Chunds (Syrians). In the Emirate period, dependent of Damasco (711-757), it belonged to the"Cora" (a territorial division) of Sidonia. In the XI century, the city declared itself independant according to what is said in the Al-Tawail chronicals. The Emir of Calsena took the city and handed over the power to Córdoba, but its separation caused Arcos to become Taifa Kingdom ruled by the Jazrum family of Berber origins. It was annexed to Seville under the power of King Almotamid. The arrival of the Almoravids at the territory provoked the weakening of the Taifa Kingdoms. In the middle of the XII century the Almohads managed to conquer them.
