The town of Conil has its origins in the donation which king Sancho IV gave to Alonso Pérez de Guzmán in 1295, who received as well the monopoly of tuna fishing which would turn into an excellent business. These great riches were what drove the Dukes of Medina Sidonia to separate Conil from Vejer’s jurisdiction in the XVI century. This led it to an even greater expansion up to the XVIII century. After the crisis of the XIX century with the French occupation, which caused the municipality’s ruin and the revolutionary movements of the end of the century, at present Conil has become a first level tourist enclave thanks to its charme, its beaches and its sea gastronomy. |
